Practical Beekeeping for Beginners - Hosted by Gavin North
Always wanted to keep honey bees? Anyone can do it – almost anywhere. Learn the basics, from building the beehive to harvesting honey.
This series of 5 all day workshops will be held at Honey Pie Farm and other locations in Prince Edward County, Ontario. Honey Pie’s Head Drone Gavin North has been keeping bees in the County for about 12 years.
Some of the topics we will discuss include:
March 25 (Sunday 9am-4pm)
Build your own beehive – top to bottom. Spring preparations. We will order all of the materials for you unless you have your own already.
May
Spring hive inspection. Installing a nucleus of bees.
June
Tour of the hive. Catching swarms/swarm prevention.
August
Honey harvest: Uncapping and extracting honey. Fall mite treatments.
September
Winterizing the hives. Mead making. About Beeswax.

Fees
$100.00 (+ HST) per workshop
$450.00 (+HST) for all five workshops - deadline for discounted rate is February 29, 2012.
Prices for equipment & nuclei are extra (optional)
We will order supplies and bees for you as a group.
Cost of a nucleus of bees is $190
Cost of beehive parts is approx. $200
Other supplies you will need are hat and veil, gloves, hive tool, smoker. We can order these for you if you don't have them.

We're at the Green Barns Farmers Market in Toronto, Ontario on Saturdays from 8AM-1PM. This year-round market is on Christie just south of St. Clair.
Also, on Saturdays we're at the Evergreen Brickworks Farmers Market from 9AM-1PM. This year round farmers market is at 550 Bayview Ave. in Toronto, Ontario.
